Catarina Frazão Santos (PI)
Researcher and Lecturer, Department of Animal Biology, University of Lisbon
Catarina is an Assistant Researcher and lecturer at the University of Lisbon. She holds a PhD in Marine Sciences, and has a background in marine biology and environmental management. Her primary research focus pertains to the multiple dimensions of ocean sustainability, particularly sustainable ocean planning and governance under global environmental change. She teaches master and bachelor courses at the Department of Animal Biology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. She is also an integrated member of MARE-Marine and Environmental Sciences Center, and a Visiting Researcher at NOVA School of Business and Economics. Over the past 6 years, she has been actively supporting the European Commission, the UNESCO and the World Bank as a senior consultant on MSP-related topics. She is also Editor-in-Chief of the new Nature npj Ocean Sustainability journal.

Catarina is a PhD Candidate in Biology at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, and a researcher at MARE-ULisboa. Her thesis – soon to be concluded – focuses on a multiscale assessment of anthropogenic pressures on sharks in a changing ocean. Vasco Pissarra, PhD Student
Co-supervised with the RRosa Lab
Vasco is a PhD Candidate in Biology at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, since March 2021, and a researcher at MARE-ULisboa. His thesis focuses on the importance of shark populations and marine biodiversity for human well-being in Cape Verde and Sao Tome and Principe. Miguel Ângelo Fernandes, PhD Student
Miguel is a PhD Candidate in Marine Sciences at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, since March 2022, a researcher at MARE-ULisboa, and a Research Fellow at the NOVA-SBE Environmental Economics Knowledge Center. His PhD project focuses on the development of a spatial-explicit index to assess the vulnerability of marine spatial planning and the blue economy to climate change in Portugal. Miguel's work is co-advised by Dr. Carina Vieira da Silva (School of Law, University of Lisbon) and supported by project BLUEFORESTS (EEA Grants). He holds a degree in Biology and a master in Marine Ecology. His research interest pertains to marine ecosystem services, as well as the importance of their conservation and sustainable ocean management. At NOVA-SBE, Miguel is responsible for providing expertise on the economic valuation of ecosystem services.

Sara García-Morales, PhD Student
Co-supervised with the Laboratorio de Conservatión y Bienestar Humano
Sara is a PhD Candidate in Marine Sciences at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, since October 2022, and a researcher at MARE-ULisboa. Her PhD project focuses on managing the blue realm under a changing climate, as well as on the assessment of adaptation measures for healthy marine ecosystems. Sara's work is co-supervised by Dr. María José Martínez-Harms (Instituto de Ecología y Biodiversidad, Chile) and supported by an FCT individual Doctoral Grant. Prior to enrolling in her doctoral programme, Sara developed her master thesis under project OCEANPLAN (see details at Lab Alumni). She then continued to work under the project as a Research Fellow until September 2022. David Miguel Santos, PhD Student
David is a PhD Candidate in Climate Change and Sustainable Development Policies at the University of Lisbon & the New University of Lisbon since September 2022, and a researcher at MARE-ULisboa. His thesis focuses on the development of ocean planning and governance processes in polar regions. David's work is supported by project MSPOLAR.

Filipa Ribeiro Teixeira Bernardo, Master Student
Filipa is a Master student in Ecology and Environmental Management at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. Her thesis focuses on the challenges and solutions to marine spatial planning and was developed under project OCEANPLAN at the OceanPlanning Lab, starting in September 2021. Her thesis is now submitted for defense while she is working in the corresponding publication.

Diogo Barreto Caeiro, Master Student
Diogo is a Master student in Marine Ecology at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. His thesis focuses on solutions to support the development of climate-smart ocean planning initiatives. Diogo started his work in September 2021, under project OCEANPLAN, at the OceanPlanning Lab, and is now finalising his dissertation.
