New study published at Frontiers in Marine Science on the first potential multi-species shark nursery area in the East Atlantic. The study was developed under project NGANDU and aims to support the effective conservation of the nursery area, which is located in Sal Rei Bay, Boa Vista Island (Cabo Verde). The nursery is used by different shark species – all threatened with extinction according to the IUCN Red List - including scalloped hammerheads (critically endangered). 01.02.2023
MSP-GREEN launching conference
The Lab PI Catarina Frazão Santos was at the launching conference of project MSP-GREEN, in Venice, as a member of the Advisory Board. Project MSP-GREEN aims at identifying how marine spatial planning can support the European Green Deal, and is co-funded by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF). 17.01.2023

Lab PhD Student Vasco Pissarra was at the 4th Sharks International 2022 conference - SI2022 in Valencia, sharing results on his work on the perceptions of fishermen on the importance of sharks for human wellbeing in Sao Tome Island! Also, PhD Student Catarina Pereira Santos participated virtually, sharing her research on a systematic map of global research efforts on sharks! 22.10.2022
MSPMED project workshop
Lab PhD Student Sara García-Morales was present at the Pan Western Mediterranean Conference by MSPMED project in Tunis, to share results from project OCEANPLAN on the interconnections between marine spatial planning and climate change. This workshop focused on fostering collaboration and networking and sharing technical knowledge, experiences and tools regarding selected topics related to MSP and Blue Economy among representatives of WestMED countries and beyond. 28.09.2022
ICES Annual Science Conference 2022
We were at the ICES Annual Science Conference 2022 in Dublin! PhD Students Sara García-Morales and David Santos presented their work, respectively, on adaptation approaches to support marine planning under change and ocean planning in polar regions. Also, Lab PI Catarina Frazão Santos co-convened a 2-day Theme Session (B) on Spatial management, climate change and biodiversity with Tundi Agardy (USA) and Andrew Kenny (UK). NGANDU field mission Boa Vista Island
Lab members Vasco Pissarra and Catarina Pereira Santos are in Boa Vista Island (Cabo Verde) since July, collecting biological and social knowledge related to sharks under project NGANDU!
