the ocean planning lab

The Ocean Planning Lab is a research group composed of senior to early career
researchers that investigate how planning of marine areas, from coastal to
open-ocean
regions, can support equitable and sustainable ocean use and conservation.

Based at Ciências ULisboa & MARE, University of Lisbon, Portugal, the Lab is led
by
Dr Catarina Frazão Santos since 2018. With collaborations extending around the globe,
it seeks to unravel sustainable solutions and pathways towards ocean sustainability
based on the best ocean science, knowledge and praxis
.

our goal

Improve the collective
understanding of
solutions
and pathways
towards ocean sustainability

The Lab has received funding by the European Research Council (ERC), the Portuguese
Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).

There are several active lines of research, all converging to how a healthy ocean can be
effectively supported by sustainable and equitable ocean governance, planning and management processes.
From spatially explicit risk assessments to participatory processes, from ecological modelling to
governance analyses, our work explores interdisciplinary pathways to sustainable ocean solutions.
