Catarina Frazão Santos

PhD, University of Lisbon & NOVA-SBE (Portugal)
Catarina Frazão Santos is the coordinator (PI) of project OCEANPLAN. She is a Research Scientist and Lecturer at the University of Lisbon, Faculty of Sciences (MARE-FCUL), and an Invited Researcher at the NOVA School of Business and Economics (Environmental Economics KC). She graduated in Marine Biology in 2006, earned a MSc in Ecology and Environmental Management in 2008, and a PhD in Marine Sciences in 2016, all by the University of Lisbon. After finishing her PhD thesis on marine spatial planning (MSP) and ocean policy in a collaboration with the Duke University Marine Lab (United States), she focused her research on how MSP can be affected by, and adapt to global climate change, working with an international team of renowned experts. She is leading author/co-author of several scientific articles in international journals (e.g. Nature Geoscience, Marine Policy), and received early career awards to support her research from ICES, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and the Luso-American Development Foundation. Since 2015, she has been supporting the European Commission in the H2020 Program, as evaluator, rapporteur and vice-chairperson. Catarina is engaged in developing inter-disciplinary, innovative research that can effectively contribute to the implementation of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDGs 13 and 14.
