MSPOLAR
Marine Spatial Planning in pOLAR regions

OBJECTIVES
The goal of this 1.5-year exploratory research project is to analyse, for the first time, within a comprehensive and integrated approach, how to support the development and implementation of sustainable, ecosystem-based, climate-smart marine spatial planning (MSP) initiatives in Polar regions, namely in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean, and in the Arctic Ocean. In this context, three main research questions (Q) arise:
Picture
Q1. What are the hindering factors and potential solutions to support the development and implementation of MSP in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean?
Picture
Q2. How can a transboundary, Pan-Arctic MSP initiative be supported and implemented in the Arctic Ocean?
Picture
Q3. What are the crosscutting challenges and opportunities to developing MSP in polar regions, and what are the potential solutions that can be designed based on lessons learned?
