WORKSHOP 10 - Marine Mammals and MSP in the context of Blue Growth (ICMMPA5, Greece)

The 5th International Conference on Marine Mammals Protected Areas (ICMMPA5) took place in Costa Navarino, Greece, from April 8 to 12, 2019. Workshop 10, Marine Mammals and MSP in the Context of Blue Growth was organised by Tundi Agardy (Sound Seas, US), Catherine Piante (WWF France) and Panagiota Maragou (WWF Greece).

The aim was to
advance the discussion on how marine mammal conservation can be accommodated in marine spatial plans, in light of MSP processes that are driven by a Blue Growth agenda

The workshop started with a plenary panel by:
Tundi Agardy: Linking MSP and MM conservation when Blue Growth drives the agenda.
Vedran Nikolic (European Commission, DG Environment): The MSP Directive and the role of conservation in planning processes.
Helene Labach (GIS3M, France): The practice of marine mammal conservation in the context of EU policies.
Catarina Frazão Santos (University of Lisbon, Portugal): MSP, conservation an blue growth in the European Atlantic, and the challenge of climate change.
Elena Gissi (University of Venice, Italy): MSP, priority setting, and the Blue Economy in the Mediterranean.
Duncan Vaughan (Natural England, UK): Blue growth and marine mammals in the Uk and Northern Europe.

Afterwards, Jon Day (ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, Australia) provided an overview on how to use a threats matrix to organize information about marine mammals that identifies effective ways that planners can use the information (for marine spatial plans, as well as for broader policies). Discussion then carried with workshop participants to get concrete recommendations on how to ensure that marine mammal information does not get excluded from marine spatial plans.

Proceedings coming soon! More on the event here.
